Answer 0106: Once I've decided to homeschool my child, what do I need to tell the school or give them? Do I need to 'prove' I'm homeschooling?
Once
you've decided to homeschool, you simply need to write a
letter of transfer to your child's school principal, explaining that you
are transferring your child to a private school. You should also request a copy
of all his or her school records. The school does NOT need any more specific
information than that. They do not need a "school number" nor do they need to
see any proof that you are homeschooling. You can then, if you choose, go online
to the Indiana Dept. of Education and report your "school's" enrollment. You
are not required to do this before you begin homeschooling. However, many parents
who are taking their children out of a public school, report enrollment as a
matter of course. Legally, you are not REQUIRED to report your enrollment unless
asked to do so by the State Superintendent of Schools. Read
our discussion on Reporting Enrollment.
